Sharing and Showing: Flavia Solva is complete!

Image

As of today, no fewer than 4,023 numismatic objects from Flavia Solva near Leibnitz in southern Styria (KG Wagna) are accessible on IKMK. The work on this rich collection was completed during the second phase of the project.

Time flies, and after six months of project work, we are pleased to announce that the processing of the coins from the Roman municipium of Flavia Solva in southern Styria (KG Wagna) has now been completed, and all coins are accessible on IKMK as of today. A total of 4,023 numismatic objects — including modern coins and religious medals — from Flavia Solva, which has been inhabited since the Augustan period, were found in the collection of Heinz Nowak. Once again, more than half of the coins date to the 4th century AD.

Of particular note is the relatively large number of Roman lead seals (plumbatae) with figural depictions. One example, for instance, shows a banquet scene with two individuals reclining on a kline (see illustration).

The next important collection, which also includes several hundred coins, comes from Strebersdorf in Burgenland and is currently being processed. We look forward with great anticipation to discovering which special pieces the soil of Strebersdorf has yielded.
